James Magnuson has provided legal services to clients large and small in a variety of areas, from large
commercial litigation to individually tailored trusts and estates. As an experienced litigator and trial
attorney, James has assisted clients on a variety of issues ranging from employment law to first
amendment issues. James’s experience as a litigator has also allowed him to develop a deep
understanding of how to tailor transactions to avoid litigation.James has provided corporate transactional services to large Minnesota companies, in keeping with his
expertise as a contributing author to the Juris Publishing treatise Advising Minnesota Corporations and
Other Business Organizations. James has advised and assisted clients in forming and growing their own Minnesota businesses, from organization to strategy to expansion. James also has assisted clients in winding up corporations and navigating the complex world of bankruptcy. James has expertise in a
variety of areas of real estate law as well, helping both businesses and individuals with real estate issues
ranging from land purchases to foreclosures.However, James does not simply assist corporate clients, but has worked with individuals to meet their
legal needs in a variety of areas. James has assisted many clients create estate plans, ranging from
complex trusts to simple estates, tailored to each client’s individual needs. This assistance has extended
to probate actions, giving clients peace of mind as they navigate the complicated world of estates.
As a contributing author to Shareholder Litigation, a Thomson Reuters treatise, James has expertise on
shareholder issues. Recognized as a rising star three times by Super Lawyers, James has lectured at
numerous CLEs, on a wide variety of commercial litigation and real estate subjects.James is an elder of Straitgate Church, a non-denominational inner-city Minneapolis church which he
has attended since birth. Straitgate was founded by James’s father, Roger Magnuson, from whom
James inherited an interest in protecting the rights of the less fortunate, and a zeal for advocacy in a
righteous cause.Education
James received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Minnesota Law School in Minneapolis, Minnesota after attending Carleton College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics.

James is licensed to practice law in the Minnesota state and federal courts since 2008, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
